Professional Organizations
Library staff members may wish to join their profsesional organization, the Nebraska Library Association (NLA). This group is the Nebraska chapter of the American Library Association (ALA), the nationwide group for library professionals, library staff members, and library supporters. NLA has an annual conference in October in conjunction with the Nebraska School Librarians Association (NSLA). At the conference are professional networking, speakers, discussion of issues, workshops, and vendor booths. A division of the American Library Association is the Public Library Association (PLA), a group with interests targeted to public libraries. Also part of the American Library Association is United for Libraries (UFL), a group specifically for board members, members of library Friends groups and library foundations. The Nebraska Library Commission purchases membership in United for Libraries for every public library in Nebraska. UFL has excellent training and support materials, especially for library board members. The American Library Association holds an annual conference in summer. The Public Library Association has a conference every other year in the spring. The Mountain Plains Library Association (MPLA) is an association of Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming members. Their annual meeting is held in conjunction with a member state annual meeting each year. Public libraries may also wish to belong to the Association for Rural and Small Libraries. Links:
