Tip Sheet for ILL transactions with the Nebraska Library Commission

Please share this with all of your staff and volunteers at your library or media center.

Making requests for materials or renewals:
You may email, call, fill out an online form, or fax the Library Commission with your requests. Requests can take one to two weeks for delivery. Please contact us if you haven't heard or received anything in over two weeks. We cannot request books published within the last 12 months. Libraries are unwilling to lend their newer materials.

Email:
It is important to use this email and not an individual email account of a staff person at the Library Commission. This email account is delivered to three librarians to assure we can always tend to your messages in a timely way. Please remember to identify yourself and your library in all of your requests.

Phone:
You may call us at (800) 307-2665 and ask for the reference desk. The reference desk is staffed between the hours of 8:00-5:00, Monday-Friday and you'll speak with the reference desk staff if you call when we are open. If you should call on the weekend or during the evening, please feel free to leave a message with the pertinent information on our answering machine.

Online Form:
This is located at http://nlc.nebraska.gov/ILL/ILLform.asp. You may use this to order books or magazine articles. Please fill out one form per request.

Fax:
You may fax request to (402) 471-6244. Please be sure to identify yourself, your library, and address the fax to Nebraska Library Commission - attn: ILL Staff.

Receiving Requests:
Please let us know, by any of the ways mentioned above, when items you have requested arrive at your library. When we make requests on your behalf, the lending library sends items directly to you. All you need to do is contact us and tell us the name of your library, the title of the book, and the request identifier number.

Returning Requests:
When you return materials to the lending library, please contact us and tell us which items (by request identifier numbers) and book title(s) you are returning so we can complete the entire transaction.

Renewals:
If your patron needs ILL materials for a longer period of time, please contact us a few days before the due date and let us know by request identifier number and title. We will contact you with the new due date if the lending library agrees to our request for a renewal.

ALA Library Fact Sheet Number 8:
As defined by the Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States, "Interlibrary Loan is the process by which a library requests material from, or supplies material to, another library. The purpose of Interlibrary Loan as defined by this code is to obtain, upon request of a library user, material not available in the user's local library."
